Post: The Choice to be Chosen

Choose yourself as an act of self-love and personal empowerment

“To be chosen is a lovely thing, but to choose oneself is revolutionary.”

Think back to the childhood playground. That familiar, tight knot in your chest as two team captains stood side by side, scanning the line of hopeful faces. You shifted your weight, made eye contact, and silently prayed to hear your name called. Or perhaps you stood in a crowded hallway, staring at a cast list posted on the wall, desperately searching for your name next to the lead role in the school play.

We tend to assume that as we step into adulthood, we outgrow that quiet ache to be picked. But the stage simply changes; the impulse remains untouched. That childhood desire percolates subtly into our professional and personal lives. We wait anxiously to be chosen for the promotion, selected for the high-stakes project, or desired romantically by the person we have put on a pedestal. We are still standing on the playground, hoping someone will point at us and say, “You. I choose you.”

Understanding the Instinct

There is nothing inherently wrong with wanting to be chosen. Wanting recognition, opportunity, and connection is a natural human drive. When your talent, preparation, and hard work match the moment, being selected is a validating milestone. It represents progress toward a goal you have actively worked to achieve. Desiring to be picked for what you bring to the table isn’t a flaw, it is a reflection of your ambition and capacity for growth.

The Toxic Loop

The danger arises when the desire to be chosen is considered as a measure of your fundamental human worth. Trying to be chosen to prove your value, to yourself or to an audience, is a psychological trap you must be weary of.

When you attach your self-worth to external selection, an unhealthy cycle begins. You constantly measure your life against those around you, scanning their achievements to gauge where you stand. You begin looking for flaws in others to build a temporary, fragile sense of superiority when you feel threatened. Every deselection is translated as a personal failure or an indictment of your character, rather than a contextual outcome.

This loop slowly but surely erodes your self-worth, leaving you dependent on outside validation for emotional stability.

Intervening with Wisdom

We seek preference over others to feel superior, mistakenly placing decision-makers on pedestals of authority and letting them dictate our intrinsic value. As a result, we direct bitterness toward those who passed us over or were chosen instead, often blaming politics or favoritism. Yet even when bias exists, it simply confirms an underlying truth, that the environment was never built for our true growth.

To break free from this loop, you must intervene with a deeper layer of personal wisdom. Reclaiming your power requires looking at rejection and selection through two distinct lenses.

First, not being chosen does not automatically indicate failure, lack of ability, or inadequacy. More often than not, it simply signals an energetic mismatch. The space you are trying to enter was either not designed for your specific trajectory, or your current presence requires adjustment.

Second, Before asking when others will choose you, ask yourself: How often do I choose myself?

Do you choose your peace over performative achievement? Do you choose inner calm over chaotic external validation? Do you show up for yourself with compassion when others fall short or walk away?

If you consistently abandon your own needs, neglect your boundaries, and wait for external validation to feel complete, others will sense that dynamic. The world rarely values someone who actively rejects themselves.

The Test of your Truth

How do you tell the difference between a space that requires growth and one that requires compromise?

If modifying your presence to be chosen means diminishing your authentic voice, suppressing your values, or sacrificing your long-term growth, you are trying to enter the wrong room. That is a cost you should never pay.

If remaining where you are means accepting a permanent misalignment just to avoid the temporary discomfort of learning something new, you are choosing safety over expansion.

The Absolute Truth

The underlying truth of your existence is straightforward: You are already chosen. You were selected by the universe for a distinct presence and purpose that no one else can replicate or fulfill.

True empowerment lies in recognizing this inherent purpose. When you align with your own values, every person, room, and situation meant to further your journey will naturally gravitate toward you. You do not need to perform, shrink, or plead to be picked. All you have to do is keep choosing yourself by learning, growing, and becoming an exact energetic match for the life you desire and designed for you.
